WAVE awards pay undergraduate educational tuition for two years (six quarters or four semesters) at an accredited public or private college or university, or licensed vocational school. Students are reimbursed up to the amount of the highest tuition charged by a public university in the state. If tuition is paid for through other means, the WAVE funds can be used to pay for other valid educational expenses, such as books, supplies, room, board, or transportation. The grant is based on undergraduate study only. The student must maintain a term grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 to continue using the award.

Thanks to all who were able to attend today’s meeting, which started with a presentation by three Seattle AOF students who attended the NAF Gala on February 24 in New York. It was obvious all three thought it was an invaluable experience — from learning how to present themselves, to networking, to dressing for success. They also did a tremendous job representing the Seattle Academies and were the only group of students from outside the greater New York area to attend. HUGE thanks to Chris Brandmeir and Joanne for coordinating!

Check out a related news story here.

Other topics included:

Discussion of mock interview experience. Low participation this year and a high number of student no-shows to interviews.

SAF Social scheduled for May 2 @ Lina’s [see Joanne for details].

SAF Luncheon & Fundraiser on Holland America scheduled for May 29. Committee members needed – submit your names to Joanne.

Case competition is in FULL SWING thanks to Jessica and Kim. Watch out for details coming in a message from Joanne about logistics and timing.

Raffle payoff breakfast coming up on May 8. Since the Convention Center already provides a continental breakfast for the undeserving winners we threw around a few ideas to supplement, including renting a coffee cart, bringing quiche, or making smoothies. Any other ideas?

Internships: only five secured to date, still working/hoping for more.

Discussed concept of developing an “expectations” document for incoming academies students as a way to increase levels of committment in the program as well as inform parents. Joanne has an example and Dave is going to ping Charlie Katz for intel.

The annual Case Competition kicks off next Tuesday [April 14] at the high schools and Wednesday [April 15] at the Foster School of Business at the University of Washington. Nearly 30 teams from Ballard, Chief Sealth and Franklin High Schools are participating this year.

The case is a Harvard Business Review case on Apple. Working with UW Foster School mentors, student teams will prepare and present their analysis based on the following charge statement:

Your role is to act as consultants hired by Apple’s executive management team as they plan their strategy for 2009. The firm faces challenges including competition from companies such as Microsoft and HP, a downturn in the global economy, and the possibility of shifting consumer preferences. Has the firm established a sustainable strategy? What can they do to continue to increase sales and further grow their market share? Which business line offers the greatest potential for future sales? Where is there opportunity for growth?

The final presentation at the UW will begin on Wednesday at 9am in the Haggett Cascade Room. Any questions about the event should be directed to Kim and/or Jessica.
